Men’s Chelsea Cup Final – Campbells Bay vs Browns Bay

BMT. “Big Match Temperament”. To temper…”to make somebody stronger through exposure to hardship.Tempered by combat. Without a doubt all 6 of the team members brought their temper on the night. There was however one stand out performance, Adrian Lagman pulled off a win that was forged out of tenacity and temper. Only this time Adrian was getting stronger and Akshay weaker. They traded blows for an hour and a half in the first set that went to a tie-break and Akshay managed to narrowly win the tie break 7-5. There was no margin to separate the two. Little did we know that Adrian had already won the match by bludgeoning his opponent in the first. Early in the second set Akshay started to cramp and collapsed. He had a medical time out that was at least 15 minutes, but in the spirit of the competition nobody was going make that count. With a big heart Akshay got up and continued to play, at one point he looked like he was going to get his rhythm back but the bloodletting had begun and Adrian seemingly undeterred maintained his focus and finished him off. He won the next 2 sets 6-3, 6-3. Each singles match had a part to play in making the evening an enthralling brawl. Adam Thompson went down 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 to Brock Mustard. By pulling off the second set and narrowly missing the win in the third, we had an extra set in the can. Brendon Furness went down in 3, but he too managed to convert the second set going down 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 to Antony Old. Winning a third set is only part of the formula you need an executioner to take out opponents in straight sets. Mark executed his opponent Nick Wiles 6-3, 6-2. To end a Chelsea Cup singles 9 match winning streak without losing a single set. BMT, Mark… BMT.

We entered the doubles, 2 matches all and only one set up, 6 - 5. There was no guarantee that we would win the doubles out right. Adam and Mark had a near flawless doubles track record and as the final score suggested on the night the match was anybody’s. Adam and Mark narrowly won the first 7-5. Then the momentum shifted and they lost the second 6-4, only to regain their composure and execute the third cleanly with a 10-2 tiebreak win. Their opponents Nick Wiles and Brock Mustard put up a valiant fight. The other doubles was excruciatingly close the Fanguna Bros with their unstoppable exuberance were tested, as they tested the patience of their opponents. They were 5-2 up in the first set but just managed to turn the tide in the end winning the first set 7-5 in the tie break. That first set win was probably just enough to break the spirit of their opponents as they manged to win the second set and the match convincingly 7-6 (5), 6-4 against Antony Old and Nick Beamish.

So yes, we won the Chelsea Cup, a big thank you to all the boys for bringing it for 9 weeks in a row. Thank you to all the committee members who ran the bar and the kitchen for the 5 home games. And thank you to all our supporters for being there every week. We had fun!

Women’s Chelsea Cup Final  - Premium Real  Estate Campbell’s Bay Team against Northcote at Albany Tennis Park Friday 8 April

The Final of the Women’s Chelsea Cup was extremely close and hard fought. The contest started with the doubles and our number one pairing of Claudia Williams and Chloe Shin had to dig deep to pull off a 7-5 7-5 win against Northcote’s Stella Cliffe and Lauren Alter. Our number two pair Lana Popovich and Victoria Hartland were no match for the very experienced pairing of Deanne and Paige Alter and despite every effort lost 6-0 6-2.  At one match all we started the singles with everything to play for. Unfortunately however we were extremely unlucky as Claudia Williams our number one decided that she couldn’t play the singles round owing to a nagging back injury. This of course meant that all our players had to move up a place.  Chloe Shin stepped up to the number one spot and didn’t disappoint.  Chloe has undoubtedly been the supreme star of the Campbell’s Bay team. She has led by example and shown a tremendous sense of team spirit.  Once again she played an intelligent and skilful game to defeat Stella Cliffe 6-4 6-4 and keep her record of winning all her singles matches throughout the competition. Our number two Victoria Hartland put on a valiant effort against the older and more experienced Lauren Alter but went down 6-1 6-2.  Lara McNaughten had to step up to the number three spot and played against Paige Alter. Paige dominated the first set winning 6-2. Lara rallied and seemed to find her stride in the second set but it was a little too late and she lost the set 6-4. It was left to our number four player Katie Hartland to even the match score and keep us in the running. Katie rose beautifully to the challenge and secured a 7-6 3-6 7-6 win. At three matches all it went to count back where we sadly lost by 7 sets to 6. So close and yet so far!

It has been a tremendous achievement for Campbell’s Bay Tennis Club.  The team won a Runners Up prize of $600 for our club. We would like to sincerely thank our main sponsor Premium Real Estate for their much appreciated support and many thanks to the Women’s Chelsea Cup team players who represented our club admirably. We look forward to next year’s competition!

Campbells Bay and Milford take the 2014 Chelsea Cup Titles.

7/04/2014 2:54:05 p.m.

Finals of The 2014 Wilson Chelsea Cup were played in front of packed spectators at Albany Tennis Park last Friday, 4 April.

In Mens, the power house of former professionals in Premium Real Estate Campbells Bay 1 team’s line up of GD Jones, Mark Nielsen, Victor Romeo and Adam Thompson were a little too strong for the 2014 new team Lake Pupuke’s Riki McLachlan, Kevin Doh, Adam Staub and Nick Turner. GD and Riki had a close encounter with GD winning two tight sets 7-6, 6-4.

As all 4 singles were won by Premium Real Estate Campbells Bay 1, teams agreed not to play doubles. This made the finishing time of the 2014 Mens Chelsea Cup Finals surprisingly early.

However in Womens, both doubles (played first) went to the deciding tie-breakers. PennysWorth Milford No.1 pair of Katherine Costain and Tracey O’Connor came out on top over Premium Real Estate Campbells Bay pair –current NZ Championship title holder Sasha Jones and Kelly Drew 4-6, 6-2, 10-8. PennysWorth Milford captain and former NZ representative Shelly Bryce played with Kairangi Vano against Sade Atkinson and US newcomer Monica Neveklovska and won 6-4,4-6,10-3. Milford led 2-0 after doubles.

When Jones beat Vano in No. 1 singles, Premium Real Estate Campbells Bay edged closer to 2-1, but they couldn’t level as all other singles went to PennysWorth Milford players.
