Men’s Chelsea
Cup 24th March - Round 7 vs Whangaparaoa
“Tipping Point”. These two words sum up the evening for me. The score
sheet was full of 6-4s, 7-5s and 7-6s. Well done to all the boys for holding
their nerve when it counted. The matches
were closely contested and when Adam casted an eye across the other matches he
thought he better win or at the very least win a set in case we went down to
sets in the count back. Suspense, uncertainty and scintillation prevailed for a
while as a partisan Whangaparooa crowd cheered. But to no avail, it was tough
to compete with the passionate roars of “come on” from Semisi as he pumped
himself up to win 7-5, 7-5 against close rival Freddie Cashmore. It was a
double duo debut for Semisi, as he doubled up with Brendon Furness to win their
first doubles together 7-6, 6-2 against Teo Susnjak and Fraser Croad. Another
noteworthy performance was from our “junior” on the night, Connor van Dalsum.
He managed to win 6-4, 7-5 against Fraser Croad, with a score like that the
momentum could have shifted in both sets. The Campbells Bay Fan Club was also
treated to some unbelievable tennis from Mark Nielsen and Alex Hamilton who
used the length and breadth of the court at every opportunity. It was a great
match, the only thing that didn’t match up was the score of 6-3, 6-3. And it
looks like our Captain and the team will be peaking for the semis! Adam is
saving his best for, last only narrowly losing his singles in 3 sets. In the
end we chalked up a very good win 5-1.
Yes we are in the Semis we have ended up 2nd on the leader
board and will be playing Beach Haven at home this Friday, Whooooo
hoooooo!
So
it will be a double header at home this Friday 31st March, as our
women’s team who are also in 2nd place will be playing Milford.
