Women’s Chelsea
Cup 17th March - Round 6 vs Lake Pupuke
Round 7 of the Women’s Chelsea Cup competition vs Lake Pupuke took place
on Friday on an absolutely beautiful evening at Lake Pupuke Tennis Club.
Our Captain and number one player Chloe Shin took on Caitlin Ward and
demonstrated once again that she is a formidable player as she made extremely
light work of defeating Caitlin with a 6-0 6-1 score. Sarah Weekley playing at
number 2 played a very tough match against Lake Pupuke’s coach Anet Tarabova
but managed to pull off a hard fought win of 6-4 6-4. Our number 3 player Lara
McNaughten totally dominated Craigie McCulloch from the start and never allowed
her older and more experienced opponent in to the game beating her with both
power and pace finishing with a 6-0 6-2 win. Miranda Yuan playing at
number 4 took on Lake Pupuke’s Aimee Brown. This was a very close contest with
both players fighting hard but Miranda couldn’t pull off a win on the night and
went down 6-3 6-4. Our top doubles pairing of Chloe Shin and Victoria Hartland
took on Caitlin Ward and Craigie McCulloch. Despite a somewhat slow and
nervous start Chloe and Victoria soon came into their own and played some
impressive tennis finishing with a 6-2 6-4 win. Our second doubles pairing of
Sarah Weekley and Lara McNaughten didn’t fare as well against Anet Tarabova and
Aimee Brown. Sarah and Lara weren’t able to fire up and get into the game which
resulted in a 6-3 6-2 loss. The overall result was a 4-2 win for
Campbell’s Bay which puts us in second place on the leader board with 30
points behind Northcote on 31 points.
Men’s Chelsea
Cup 17th March - Round 6 vs Mairangi Bay
“King of The Bays” - Congratulations to our Premium Chelsea Cup Men’s
Team for a solid win on Friday night. We knocked Brown’s Bay off their perch
and now Mairangi Bay. It was a very good win, 5 -1 against a younger and less
experienced side. Despite the win margin the matches were still very closely
contested and yet again the entertainment value was top notch.
Congrats to Connor van Dalsum on his first Chelsea Cup win against Filip
Popovich, 6-4, 7-6 (5). Connor held his nerve to win the tie break against
Filip who decided to go large or go home on 3 match-points against him. Mark
Nielsen gave nothing away in his 6-1, 6-0 win over Kento Suga. In the true
spirit of the noblest of sports, Mark made his opponent, “earn and learn” to
win every point. Bailey Sutton at just 14 or 15 was given the same master class
by Brendon Furness a 6-2, 6-4 win that didn’t necessarily go all Brendon’s way.
Adam went to 3 sets against Mairangi Bay’s No1. Ben Holmes losing 3-6, 6-2,
6-2.
Our red hot Tongan team of Matavao and Semisi Fanguna again did not
disappoint the crowd. It was like a WWF tag team title fight, the heavyweights
vs the bantamweights. Trust me the match was close at 6-2, 7-6 and the
exchanges hotly contested. The Bros continued to hit huge, with Nadal-like
topspin and the Mairangi Boys often replied with utter distain. Counter
punching by taking the ball early and neutralising the fire balls.
And
there’s more to come, the men play their last round robin match at Whangaparaoa
this Friday 24th. They are currently in the top 3, and we will most
likely be in the Semi Finals on the 31st March. The women have a bye
this Friday.
