Women’s Chelsea
Cup 3rd March - Round 4 vs Northcote
Round 4 of Women’s Chelsea Cup vs Northcote produced another fabulous
evening of tennis. The team was delighted once again with the strong turn out
from their club members and want to thank them for their support. Our Captain
Chloe Shin playing at number one stayed true to form easily defeating
Northcote’s Elys Ventura 6-1 6-4 who was no match for Chloe’s superior skill.
Our number 2 Sarah Weekley made short work of Northcote’s Paige Alter. Sarah
never looked particularly troubled and cruised to a 6-3 6-1 win. Victoria
Hartland our number 3 fought valiantly against Northcote’s Emily Martin but
went down 6-1 6-1 against a much more experienced player. The star of the
evening was our number 4 player Miranda Yuan who was making her debut
appearance for the club at Chelsea Cup. She played a fantastic three set match
against the more experienced higher ranked Katie Griffith. Miranda was on fire
and after a long battle defeated Katie 4-6 6-4 6-4. This was a fantastic result
for Miranda.
Our top doubles pairing of Chloe and Trixie Muller Leiendeder
playing against Elys Ventura and Paige Alter proved far too strong for their
Northcote opponents and cruised to an easy 6-2 6-0 victory. Our bottom doubles
pairing of Sarah and Victoria had a much tougher battle on their hands against
Emily Martin and Katie Griffith. At one set all they started the super tie
break. Unfortunately Sarah and Victoria tightened up during the last few points
and finally went down 6-3 5-7 8-10. A really good effort however against two
older much more experienced doubles players. The result at the end of the
night was another win for Campbells Bay who proved to be the stronger team
winning 4 out of their 6 matches. We are now half way through the competition
and the team is currently in second place on the leader board.
Men’s Chelsea
Cup 3rd March - Round 4 vs Northcote
Make it count never meant so much to us as it did last Friday night. Yes
you guessed it we won on a count back. 8 sets to 6. So now we stand in 3rd
place on the ladder of 8 teams, Northcote on the night stood in 7th
place. One would assume we would have had an easier win but this early in the
competition it really depends on who you have played so far. Unlike a Hollywood
blockbuster you really don’t know what might happen on “Fight Night”. Adam and
Mark had their first doubles loss and I know that would have hurt. They went
down 4-6, 6-2,10-8 to Andy Allen and Steve Downs. Steve Downs was once ranked
World No.1 Junior Doubles player in 1993. So I guess an old dog’s tricks do
work!
The Fanguna Bros almost literally spiked their opponents Liam Cunliffe
and Joel Cattell 6-1, 6-0 on their way to a volleyball game they were playing later
that evening. Now I understand a lot more about their on-court acrobatics! The
singles matches were evenly matched. Win or lose every game and certainly every
set counted. Adam Thompson lost to Andrew Allan 6-3, 6-2. Mark Nielsen won
against Steve Downs 6-1, 6-2. Connor Van Dalsum in his Chelsea Cup debut lost
courageously to Liam Cunliffe 6-7, 6-4, 6-1. And Brendon Furness was all
business as usual keeping the number tidy in defeating his opponent Patrick
Yarker 7-5, 6-2.
Thank you to all who came and supported the team!
