Women’s Chelsea Cup 24th February - Round 3 vs Milford
Round 3 of the Women’s Chelsea Cup competition took place on Friday against Milford at Milford Tennis Club. It was a beautiful warm evening – perfect conditions for tennis. We started with the singles matches. Our number one player Chloe Shin made very short work of Milford’s Shaylee Syme. Chloe cruised to an extremely easy 6-0 6-1 win. Sarah Weekley our number 2 player didn’t seem to be challenged by Milford’s Deshma Weerapperuma either. Sarah proved far too strong for Deshma and won 6-0 6-1. Our number 3 Victoria Hartland played Sadheera Weerapperuma. Sadheera played well dominating Victoria from the start. Victoria despite every effort couldn’t get in to the match and went down 6-1 6-1. Our number four player Lara McNaughten played Milford’s Elys Tse. Lara played smart tennis and finished with a solid 6-3 6-2 win.
Our top doubles pairing of Chloe Shin and Trixie Muller Leiendeder played Shaylee Syme and Deshma Weerapperuma. This was the first time that Chloe and Trixie had played together and they combined really well. They totally dominated their opponents from the start and finished with a 6-1 6-1 win. Trixie is a new addition to our Chelsea Cup team and is proving to be a real asset. Our second doubles pairing of Sarah Weekley and Lara McNaughten played Sadheera Weerapperuma and Elys Tse. Sarah and Lara got off to a very slow start finding themselves 3-0 down in the first set. To their credit they remained incredibly relaxed and focussed and managed to turn the match around to pull off a 6-4 6-2 win. All in all it was a great night of tennis for the Campbells Bay team who won 5 out of their 6 matches – a fabulous result!
Men’s Chelsea Cup 24th February - Round 3 vs Brown’s Bay
Show me the money! This is the only expression that comes to mind when I think of that night…”Show me the money” and sadly for those of you too young to know the movie Jerry Maguire (1996) this story might be lost on you. The Fanguna Bros were battling it out like two street fighters, if the second shot wasn’t bigger than the first… it didn’t count. Their version of the one two punch, I guess. The only defence the opposition had at one point was a lob that seemed to travel for miles and so did Junior, only problem was he ran out of court and a skip pad. He just kinda face planted against the wall and then didn’t move an inch. “Nah!... it wasn’t that BAD, was it?” we were thinking. And then we thought…”111 and an ambulance!!!!”. As soon as his brother and the opposition rallied to his aide he pops up with a huge smile on his face. (Show me the money…Show meeeeee the moneeeey) L.O.L. Exhibition tennis at it’s finest! They pulled off a great win, full of power, performance and passion! 4-6, 6-3,10-8 (6) versus Ashkay Ashok and Nick Beamish. Adam and Mark were brutal in their doubles a mixture of raw power and crazy angles. They won convincingly against Brock Mustard and Nick Wiles 6-3,6-2. Our junior Adrian Lagman put up a great fight against an opponent who has only lost 5 matches in the 47 he has played in the last 2 years. His opponent Askhay Ashok generates incredible power on all his shots with uncanny ease. Adrian went down kicking, 6-1, 6-4. Brendon Furness ran a marathon or two to win his match against a ranked NZ junior Nick Beamish. The match was over 2 hours, the shot making sublime. I can’t help think that maybe Brendon thought he was playing a mirror image of himself….. 30 years ago! Everybody in the team gave their all on the night and gave their very best. Mark Nielson was the victor 7-6, 6-2 against Nick Wiles and Adam went down fighting against Brock Mustard 6-3, 6-2. The score was no reflection of the bare fist brawl that ensued. We gave it all and got it all! Well almost! Congrats to the boys on their 4-2 win.
